Why should I capture my story now?
When you do this is entirely up to you. But we know one thing for sure: make sure you record your story, in your words, on your terms, while you are still able to. We’ve all got a story (or many) to tell, and there are always people we care about who would love to hear those stories – now or in the future.
How do I know you'll do a good job?
We’ve been in the business of capturing people’s stories for over 20 years. The yBC team (the team behind CaptureMyStory) has conducted hundreds of interviews, across all sorts of topics, right around the world. Interviewees have included olympians, academics, sports stars, business leaders, captains of industry, celebrities and ordinary people with great stories to tell! We consistently get feedback that we do a great job, and that the process was painless (or even enjoyable). And if you’re not happy about something, we’ll fix it.
I don't have a story to tell.
We all have a story to tell. If you think you’ll struggle to tell your life story, we’ll take on that challenge. We are very good at helping people open up, remember and share.
How long will this take?
It depends on the project you choose to do with us. But in ALL cases, we do all the hard work in the background – before and after we interview you. So the time you need to spend on this is minimal. Once you tell us which story/stories you want to share, we’ll let you know what’s involved.
I'm worried about the process.
There’s no need to worry. This is what we do, over and over. We will happily sit down with you and plan out the project so that you know what is happening every step of the way. You will be in control.
I'm worried about my privacy.
We take your privacy very seriously indeed. We will take care of any treasured information you share with us, and will not share it with anyone else. Your story is yours to tell.
I think I can do this by myself, without your help.
Great! Some people can, and we hope you have fun doing it! We’ll even help you out with some pointers if you need them.
Can I involve my family?
You sure can – but only if you want. That’s all part of the planning.
Do I get to make edit decisions?
Yes of course. There are plenty of opportunities to do this, starting with the interview. We will explain this all to you when we meet with you.
What if I don't like it?
Honestly, this has not happened to us yet. But if there is something you don’t like, we promise to do our best to fix it in the edit process, and if it’s possible.
Do you offer this in my town/city?
Yes! We have team members based in multiple locations, but we can work with clients anywhere in New Zealand – or indeed, the world. We don’t have to be with you in person. In fact, we can conduct high quality audio and video interviews over the internet, on best-in-class platforms (much like Zoom or FaceTime, but much higher quality). We use the same platforms that professional publishing companies use.
Can I give this as a gift to my parent / grandparent / spouse / relative / friend?
Yes of course. We offer gift packages and gift certificates. You can even do this as a surprise (with a big “reveal”) for a family member, or a special day.
